چکیده

We study thermal states of transiently accreting neutron stars (with mean accretion rates Ṁ ∼ 10 − 10 M⊙ yr ) determined by the deep crustal heating of accreted matter sinking into stellar interiors. We formalize a direct correspondence of this problem to the problem of cooling neutron stars. Using a simple toy model we analyze the most important factors which affect the thermal states of accreting stars: a strong superfluidity in the cores of low-mass stars and a fast neutrino emission (in nucleon, pion-condensed, kaon-condensed, or quark phases of dense matter) in the cores of high-mass stars. We briefly compare the results with the observations of soft X-ray transients in quiescence. If the upper limit on the quiescent thermal luminosity of the neutron star in SAX J1808.4–3658 (Campana et al. 2002) is associated with the deep crustal heating, it favors the model of nucleon neutron-star cores with switched-on direct Urca process.

Time-Variable Emission from Transiently Accreting Neutron Stars In Quiescence due to Deep Crustal Heating

Transiently accreting neutron stars in quiescence (LX ∼ <10 erg s) have been observed to vary in intensity by factors of few, over timescales of days to years. If the quiescent luminosity is powered by a hot NS core, the core cooling timescale is much longer than the recurrence time, and cannot explain the observed, more rapid variability. However, the non-equilibrium reactions which occur in t...

Neutron star cooling: theoretical aspects and observational constraints

The cooling theory of isolated neutron stars is reviewed. The main cooling regulators are discussed, first of all, operation of direct Urca process (or similar processes in exotic phases of dense matter) and superfluidity in stellar interiors. The prospects to constrain gross parameters of supranuclear matter in neutron star interiors by confronting cooling theory with observations of isolated ...

Crustal Heating and Quiescent Emission from Transiently Accreting Neutron Stars

Nuclear reactions occurring at densities ≈ 10 g cm in the crust of a transiently accreting neutron star efficiently maintain the core at a temperature ≈ (5–10)× 10K. When accretion halts, the envelope relaxes to a thermal equilibrium set by the flux from the hot core, as if the neutron star were newly born. For the time-averaged accretion rates (∼< 10 −10 M⊙ yr ) typical of low-mass X-ray trans...

Neutron Star Cooling

Observation of cooling neutron stars can potentially provide information about the states of matter at supernuclear densities. We review physical properties important for cooling such as neutrino emission processes and superfluidity in the stellar interior, surface envelopes of light elements due to accretion of matter and strong surface magnetic fields. The neutrino processes include the modif...

Electron-ion scattering in dense multi-component plasmas: application to the outer crust of an accreting neutron star

The thermal conductivity of a dense multi-component plasma is critical to the modeling of accreting neutron stars. To this end, we perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to calculate the static structure factor of the dense multi-component plasma in the neutron star crust from near the photosphere-ocean boundary to the vicinity of the neutron drip point. The structure factors are us...
